Garden Fence

I first played with this block last Summer when I was inspired by the pillows on the cover of Martha Stewart Living. Shannon from Pieceful Quilter named it "Garden Fence" and the name stuck. Well, my top's finally done and I'm happy with the color combination of golds, yellows, grays and white. (how do you spell gray - grey or gray?)
This cold weather and snow is continuing to ruin my photography, so here's the best I can do. (And it requires moving furniture).

It's a super easy quilt to make and I think it would be awesome in lots of color combinations (Gray and pink, gray and aqua...)

Here are the cutting dimensions for one block that finishes at 10" (10 1/2" unfinished):
Center square: 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
Outer rectangles: 4 - 2 1/2" x 3" and 4 - 2 1/2" x 5"
White: 2 - 1 1/2" x 4 1/2"; 2 - 1 1/2" x 6 1/2"; and 4 - 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
To piece the block:
  • Sew the white 4 1/2" and 6 1/2" rectangles to opposite sides of the center square.
  • Sew the white 2 1/2" rectangles between 2 outer rectangles; add these to the center pieced square.
I simply added 1" finished (1 1/2" unfinished) white strips for sashing. Easy! Easy!

  59. Is it just me? I would love to know how you did the sashing. What strips did you cut? Did you cut strips for one side and bottom of each block? Or did you just strips long enough for the entire row? Just curious on how you did the sashing.

    1. The blocks are sashed with strips between each block and long strips between the rows.

  67. I have started a quilt using this pattern....and love the process so far...its simple and pops out....a person can do a scrappy one...I am using a particular pattern line from Hoffman California a design called Madison....and extremely pleased. The only thing about this pattern is the 1 1/2 inch strips you have to be carefull to keep your stitching even

    ReplyDelete
  68. How did you end up quilting this? Did you do straight lines or did you trace the squares?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I had this one all-over quilted by a a local long arm quilter. There's one in my new book "Simply Modern Christmas" and I did straight lines diagonally on it.

  93. I love this quilt, hope to make it someday. Dictionary.com says this about Gray or Grey: Image result for gray or grey
Grey and gray are both accepted in the English language. They refer to a color of a neutral tone between black and white, and can also be used metaphorically to convey gloom and dullness. However, gray is the more popular spelling in the US, while grey reigns supreme in the UK.Jun 10, 2015. I look at it this way, grey for England, and gray for America, lol. It is funny though I am USA born, I tend to want to spell it grey!
